Chartering Phi Phi Island to Boateng Group & Langkawi

Langkawi

Langkawi Island lies 9 miles off the Malaysian coast.  Langkawi is 17 miles long and 11 miles wide. A group of 4  islands extends 2 miles south of Langkawi.

The charm of Langkawi lies in the quiet rural landscape and Malay kampongs scattered over the island.  The geological formation caused by the erosion of the limestone rock is stunning.  The sheer sides of limestone stacks plunge several hundred feet into the sea, narrow deepwater channels between vertical cliffs form passages between islands.  Steep sided ridges and peaks shape a dramatic skyline.

Langkawi is a sophisticated tourist destination with a range of 5 star resorts, good dining, shopping (Langkawi is a duty free island) and related tourist attraction.  There are regular international flights in and out of Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Europe.

Kemana IV berths at Telaga Harbour which is a 15 minute taxi ride from the airport. Telaga Harbour has been modeled on Saint Tropez and has a range of European style bars and restaurants.

The berths are in front of the promenade so you can step ashore and stroll along in front of the bars and restaurants. There is a cable car station close by that will take you to the top of the mountain above Telaga Harbour.  It is worth taking the trip for the views you can enjoy.

From here head southward to explore the southern islands, the scenery is unique and stunning.  On Pulau Timun, there is a fresh water lake a short walk over a col. The lake is mysterious as it nestles below towering peaks. 

Motor slowly through the channels, at some of the more remote beaches, if you are lucky, you will see sea water otters frolicking at low tide.

From here head up the east coast inside the inner channel to "Hole in the Wall". As the name suggests, this is a narrow channel that cuts through a high ridge that encircles a mangrove forest approximately 5 miles in diameter. Take the RIB to explore the water channels that snake through the mangrove forest.  You can see monkeys, large monitor lizards, and other wild life in the forest. There is a floating fish farm and seafood restaurant where you can eat a seafood dinner that is absolutely fresh.

From here head upto Thailand. The Boateng group of islands is just 27 miles north of Langkai a 1½  hour ride north.

Boateng Group of Islands

The boateng group consists of 13 islands.The water is clearer here than in Langkai and there are some interesting reefs and dive sites. It is a fascinating remote group of island that is worth exploring in the RIB.

At Koh Lipe go ashore, and wander along the beach. Immediately you know you are Thailand, you are greeted with smiles by the beach vendors, there is a selection of budget bars, restaurants, and beach massages. The restaurants serve wonderfully innovative salads, traditional seafoods and curries.

There are sheltered anchorages here and it is worth stopping for a day or an overnight stay.

From here head on up to Koh Rok Nok a  2½ hour run.

Koh Chuak Island

At low tide there is a small beach to swim ashore to. There is some good snorkeling and diving at Koh Chuak there is a cave dive into a hong. Admire the extraordinary shape of the weathered limestone that makes up these islands.

There is no sheltered anchorage here so spend a day here and then head on up to Phi Phi island.

Rok Nok Island

Rok Nok is a marine park, there are two islands one is uninhabited the other has a ranger station and a small budget resort on it. Anchor between the two islands and swim ashore to the beach on either island, on the uninhabited island there is a small fisherman’s shrine next to a stream that comes down the hill, the shrine is notable for the phallic symbol.

The north side of both islands are sheer cliffs that drop into the sea.  The south side has lovely sandy beaches.

Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi has a lot to offer. The town on Phi Phi has shops, bars restaurants, Thai boxing shows, massages and other attractions.

Get away from the main town and there are quiet anchorages and beaches where you can escape from mass tourism.

Kayaking here is brilliant. There are narrow passages that twist in between sheer cliffs for a distance of a couple of hundred meters caves that you can just enter at certain states of the tide and sheer cliffs you can paddle under.

You can explore the place where the film the Beach was filmed, that is like a mini tropical Shangri la, or take the RIB in at high water to a large Hong.There is a good offshore reef for snorkelling and diving on and a good selection of dive sites for the keen diver.It is easy to spend a couple of days exploring this area and enjoying all it has to offer.

From Phi Phi to Phuket is a 1½ hour run.

At Phuket disembark at Ao Chalong jetty at the south eastern end of Phuket. From here it is a 40 minute limousine ride to the airport which is at the north end of Phuket or check into one of Phuket’s excellent resorts and chill out for a few days.

There is a lot to do here:
There is fishing offshore for juvenile tuna, and there are sailfish and marlin in these waters. There is excellent snorkeling along the reef and a variety of dive sites for the keen diver. Explore the coast line on the kayaks stepping ashore whenever you see anything interesting . Take the dinghies sailing or just laze around and enjoy the quiet tranquility of these islands.

From here move onto Koh Ngai a run of 1 hour.
